Charley Varrick robs a bank in a small town with his friends, but instead of obtaining a small amount of money, they discover they stole a very large amount of money belonging to the mob. Charley must now come up with a plan to not only evade the police but the mob as well.
Charley Varrick (a.k.a.The Last of the Independents and Kill Charley Varrick) is a 1973 American neo-noir crime film directed by Don Siegel and starring Walter Matthau, Andrew Robinson, Joe Don Baker and John Vernon. Charley Varrick was based on the novel The Looters by John H. Reese and is the first of four consecutive films Matthau appeared in that were not comedies.
I somehow added this to the watchlist (perhaps drunk) but it popped up on Netflix. This movie did not disappoint!
From my Letterboxd review:
What a great fuckin’ movie! Walter Mathhau is such a lovable dick in every thing he’s in. And this has the trifecta of movie bad guys: Dean Wormer from Animal House, Joe Don Baker (who’s an asshole in every movie except 2 James Bond movies) and the main killer from Dirty Harry. And let’s throw in Stanley Roper from Three’s Company for good measure. Unfortunately, Buttermaker hated this movie because there should have been a sequel. Probably the best film set in New Mexico and #2 crop duster film behind North by Northwest.
